NYU freshman wrestler Gabriel Gleason has been named University Athletic Association (UAA) Athlete of the Week for his sterling performance on Saturday, Feb. 13.
During NYU's tri-meet sweep of the University of Scranton and SUNY Morrisville, Gleason went 2-0 at 149 pounds, outscoring his opponents, 25-0.
In his first match of the day, Gleason defeated Scranton's Tom Manning, 10-0. He then topped that performance in his second match by blanking Morrisville's Goodson Phillippe, 15-0.
NYU defeated Scranton 27-13 and SUNY Morrisville 26-14 to raise its record to 12-10 this season.
“Gleason is really playing to his strengths,” NYU assistant coach Corey Luce explained. “He's very tough on top and a very strong leg rider. He used those strengths on Saturday and came out on top.”
With the two victories, Gleason improved to 9-14 on the season. It is the first time in his career that he has been named UAA Athlete of the Week.
