NCAA Championships Results

Freshman Joan Kanarkiewicz finished 16th in the 5,000-meter race at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Marietta, OH, on Saturday.

Having qualified for the second NCAA Championship in her inaugural season (she also ran at the NCAA Cross Country Championship in November), Kanarkiewicz posted a time of 18:38.68 and placed 16th in the 18-person race.

Ayla Mitchell of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh won the race in a Don Drumm Stadium record time of 17:14.52.

Kanarkiewicz, the Violets' lone representative at the meet, had qualified for the NCAA's when she set the team record with a 17:06.59 performance at the Swarthmore Last Chance Invitational on May 11.

"Joan was in the lead group for about nine laps," head coach Nick McDonough said.  "The heat was really oppressive, and it hit her like a brick wall in the last 2-1/2 laps.  It was a good effort on a tough day.  But, she had a great first season for us."
